Emily-Kriste Wilcox

Using a painterly approach Emily-Kriste Wilcox is a specialist in slab-built ceramic vessels. Each piece becomes it’s own painting featuring an abstract interpretation of the ever-changing skies, seas, coastline and landscape, reflecting a moment in time.

Emily-Kriste Wilcox has been working as a professional ceramicist for over 20 years and is a specialist in hand-building. A construction process she has developed and refined from early influences of dressmaking patterns, the juxtaposition of colours and texture and an expressive painterly style. Inspired by the tea caddies in the V&A collection – Emily explores the form that in turn informs the continuation of mark making as the story and view unfolds around multifaceted panels, softly punctuated by a considered seam or join.

The colours and textures of the landscape are a constant source of inspiration. Coastal colours feature regularly in the collections – with strong navy blues or muted tonal combinations of soft blues. Other pieces feature bolder colours with a focus on greenery and colours you would find across the hills or in the garden. Emily’s surrounding environment combined with marks made and the tools used makes each handcrafted vessel individual, a unique painting in clay.
