Goldfinch Brookes

Manchester-based Gareth ‘Goldfinch’ Brookes is an award-winning designer and maker of joyful, art-led furniture inspired by the urban architecture of Manchester.

Growing up with an artist father, Gareth searched for the best way to express himself though design, finding his ‘eureka’ moment during Covid when he set up a simple gazebo workshop in his garden. Proudly self-taught, he has honed traditional woodworking skills through many dedicated hours at the bench.

Gareth takes inspiration from walking the streets of Manchester admiring the architectural details — from the pitch of a roof to the curve of a window frame — details shaped by generations of craftspeople. Using British timber sourced locally, he celebrates the material’s history, allowing the wood to speak while creating pieces intended to be enjoyed, used well, and passed down.

'Furniture is made to be enjoyed, used well and then passed down to the next generation. I believe my primary job is to bring people joy.'
