Naturalmat

Naturalmat have been pioneering sustainability in the mattress industry since 1999. Their collection of organic mattresses, beds & bedding are handcrafted at their solar-powered workshop on the banks of the River Exe in Devon, using a selection of naturally sustainable, organic materials.

Every great idea starts with a moment of inspiration. For Mark Tremlett and Peter Tindall theirs rather unusually, came on the high seas, some twenty years ago. Both keen sailors, they struggled to understand why mattresses on boats were so uncomfortable. So on the banks of the River Exe, they began hand making natural fibre mattresses that were breathable, fabulously comfortable and fitted neatly into a boat’s awkward spaces.

Another lightbulb moment came after the birth of Mark’s first child. If they could make eco-friendly mattresses for boats, why not babies too? After all they didn’t deserve to be sleeping on the harmful toxins found in synthetic materials. With this in mind, they started crafting mattresses for babies with the same pure, organic materials. They soon discovered that parents were delighted with the eco-conscious approach and wanted the same for themselves and with that, Naturalmat was born.

The best way to experience the craftsmanship of what Naturalmat do is to get up-close to truly appreciate every stitch, fibre, tufting button and cover that goes into creating Naturalmat’s organic mattresses, beds, toppers and bedding. We are delighted to have the best of Naturalmat’s collection to view and try at Derwent House.

'We need to move to a mattress industry without waste. From the materials we choose to our up-cycling and recycling services, we're stopping at nothing to close the loop.'
